Robert D. Chetlin, Ph.D., CSCS*D, ACSM-EP is an associate professor, Exercise Science program director, and NSCA-ERP director in the Department of Sports Medicine at Mercyhurst University. He received his B.A. in political science from Northwestern University, and M.S. and Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from the West Virginia University (WVU) School of Medicine.

Prior to his appointment to the faculty at Mercyhurst in August 2015, Dr. Chetlin taught at the WVU School of Medicine for 20 years; he also was employed for two years as a Research Physiologist at the Centers for Disease Control, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (CDC-NIOSH) in Morgantown, West Virginia. During his time at the CDC, Dr. Chetlin earned two certifications in handling and removal of biohazardous materials, including bacteria and viruses.

Dr. Chetlin is a professional member of both the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). He is accredited as an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with Distinction (CSCS*D) and ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-EP). Additionally, Dr. Chetlin serves as the NSCA Education Recognition Program (ERP) director at Mercyhurst, and as a senior editor for the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research (JSCR).

Dr. Chetlin’s research has historically focused on the physiological, biological, hormonal, genetic, and epigenetic effects of exercise and activity in recreational, athletic, clinical, and vocational populations. He has published his work in several peer-reviewed research journals, including Muscle and Nerve, Archives of Clinical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Environmental Health Insights, Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, The Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, and Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.
