VETERAN'S DAY 2019 EVENT REGISTRATION
Mercyhurst University will host several events during the week preceding Veterans Day as part of the university’s annual Veterans Tribute.
Starting Monday, Nov. 4, each day will begin with Mercyhurst ROTC students raising the American flag, while Reveille and Retreat plays over the carillon. ROTC will also hold a “Warrior Run” around the Mercyhurst campus for students Wednesday beginning 7 a.m. at the Saxon Stadium parking lot.
On Thursday, the university will host for members of the Mercyhurst community a Celebration of Valor to honor veterans at 3:30 p.m. in the Mercy Heritage Room in Sullivan Hall. Retired Major Joe Pfadt will serve as the event’s main speaker.
A host of student-centered events will then conclude the week, beginning with a military activities fair Friday at 1 p.m. The fair will include a rock wall, face painting, a military vehicle display, card decorating for veterans, as well as other activities. Finally, ROTC will host a series of “Warrior Challenge” competition starting at 4 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Rec Center. Registration is required.
Throughout the week, university community members are also encouraged pick up and wear Mercyhurst military dog tags, which students will distribute around campus. Students in the History Department will also distribute poppies for pinning to commemorate Veterans Day on Nov. 11.
Students will also have the opportunity to view “Our Fight,” a film examining the role played by soldiers from Erie in World War II. It will be shown in the Student Union Great Room Tuesday, Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 8 from noon to 3 p.m., and Monday, Nov. 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
