Qualifying employees of licensed childcare centers can now earn their Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education at Mercyhurst University for free, thanks to a grant from the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE).

The award establishes scholarships that cover tuition, fees, and books (room and board charges are not covered). Additional supports, like being assigned a professional development coordinator to help navigate a student’s career pathway, are included.

“High-quality experiences that support growth and professional development are crucial to all educators,” said Kortnie Fisher, assistant professor of Education. “This funding is essential, especially to our local community. We are excited to share in the experience of bringing greater expertise to the classrooms in early childhood centers that support the youngest learners.”

Interested individuals are encouraged to apply for Fall 2024 or Spring 2025 start dates. Eligibility requirements include:

  • Be a PA resident
  • Be a current employee at a certified childcare program for three months or demonstrate employment history for six months
  • Work an average of 25 hours/week in a certified childcare program
  • Earn no more than $21.63/hour for a childcare teacher or $25/hour for a childcare director

The award was established by the Early Childhood Education Professional Development Organization at PASSHE and supported by the Pennsylvania Office of Child Development and Early Learning of Pennsylvania’s Department of Human Services and Pennsylvania’s Department of Education.
