Born and raised in Tacoma, WA, Matthew Coté's artwork has been shown nationally and internationally in various notable exhibitions, including in the State Museum of Pennsylvania, the Museum of Glass, the Tacoma Art Museum, the Washington State History Museum, the Erie Art Museum, Montana State University, East Carolina University, Wayne Art Center, and the Indianapolis Art Center. Matthew uses the medium of jewelry/metalsmithing to convey artistic activism. The conceptual purpose of Matthew's artwork is based on the ability of a worn object, such as jewelry, to reach outside the gallery or the typical viewing space through intimate engagement. His artistic concepts draw inspiration from political campaign slogans, flags, and propaganda; all of which have simple designs that grab attention.

An all-inclusive approach emphasizing individual strengths while also pushing collaboration and exploration in the subject. Overall, Matthew Coté aims to strike a chord by connecting with individual student interests to push involvement and enthusiasm in the given class subject.
“My process depends entirely on the concept of the work. Contemplating the deep conceptual aspects of the technical process is not something I heavily consider. I have always appreciated the satisfaction in the finished work rather than the process leading to the finished result. The satisfaction I gain is dependent on witnessing the message of the work on display and what meaning or discussions come from the work that the viewer perceives.” - Matthew Coté
