TEACHING EXCELLENCE AWARD NOMINATION

The Teaching Excellence Award highlights Mercyhurst University's commitment to teaching excellence and is given annually to one outstanding members of the faculty. Recipients are recognized at graduation, as well as at a separate ceremony, and receive a small monetary award. This award was established to recognize contributions to the intellectual life of the University, to honor faculty members who embody excellence in all aspects of teaching, including advising, mentoring, teaching to mission, and engaging students in their learning.
 
Students, faculty, and alumni are invited to submit nominations. Past recipients of the award may not win again, so a list of those faculty still teaching at Mercyhurst is provided. The person nominated should be a professor who has unselfishly given of him or herself to students, and demonstrated the ability to impart knowledge while challenging his/her students, encouraging independent inquiry and creative thought, as well as respect for and an understanding of our mission.
 
Criteria you may want to consider include the following:

  • Outstanding teaching effectiveness both within and outside the classroom
  • Teaching that is innovative, intellectually rigorous, creative, engaging, and that fosters critical thinking
  • Integration of their scholarship, and the most recent scholarship in their field, into the classroom
  • Excellent advising and/or mentoring of students including supervision of internships, student groups, and other interactions outside of the classroom
  • Faculty whose teaching demonstrates a commitment to excellence .
  • Professors who support the Mission, e.g., by raising global awareness, promoting social justice, and educating both heart and mind
  • Faculty who promote active and collaborative learning, through a variety of hands-on projects, simulations, case studies, service learning and outreach experiences, etc., that encourage students to apply what they are learning
  • Faculty who help students discover their passions and develop a dedication to life-long learning
  • Faculty who show extraordinary success in providing intensive individual research experiences for undergraduate students
