Mercyhurst equestrians riding high on victories
Once again, the Mercyhurst Equestrian Team is riding high with major wins in the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) to finish the season second among 14 teams and send five riders to regionals.
The team includes senior Maia Edwards-Borowicz, juniors Kelsey Collins and co-captain Katie Snable, sophomores Alyssa Reedy and co-captain Emily Thayer, and freshmen Hunter Reiff, Annika Weisjahn and Taylor Baker. Dr. Mary Ann Owoc is faculty advisor for the team coached by Halli Bidwell.
“They are such a great group of young talented riders who are competing against bigger teams,” Bidwell said. “They have a great work ethic and have a wonderful team spirit. It is exciting to see the team that had been small for so many years get larger and more competitive.”
The Mercyhurst equestrians compete within IHSA’s Zone 2 Region 5 against teams from the following schools: West Virginia University, Seton Hill University, Bethany College, Washington and Jefferson College, Slippery Rock University, California University of Pennsylvania, Clarion University of Pennsylvania, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, Allegheny College, Penn State Behrend, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, University of Pittsburgh and Saint Vincent College.
Co-captain Emily Thayer said, “While we enjoy the competition, we have become a team that also has fun with each other and bonds over a shared love of horses. Each rider is so invested in making the team better that we have built up momentum and it has certainly shown in the later half of the season, when we won team prizes in four out of five shows and moved into second place in the region behind Seton Hill.”
The following riders will compete in regionals later this month at Alfred University:
Maia Edwards-Borowicz: Novice Fences and Open Flat
Kelsey Collins: Novice Flat
Katie Snable: Advanced Walk Trot Canter
Emily Thayer: Novice Fences
Annika Weisjahn: Intermediate Flat
