Mary Schaaf elected trustee of Mercyhurst University

mary schaafMary E. Patalon Schaaf, who currently serves as the Erie County Controller, has been elected to the Board of Trustees of her alma mater, Mercyhurst University.

A 1968 Mercyhurst graduate, she earned a master’s degree from Edinboro University in 1977 and certification in Portfolio Performance Measurement at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Finance. She received the Mercyhurst University Distinguished Alumni Award in 1995.  

Schaaf enjoyed a career of more than 33 years as Senior Financial Advisor with Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith beginning in 1977. She was elected Controller in 2011 and re-elected in 2015. 

Her community service includes the board of SafeNet, Erie’s domestic violence agency, and membership in the American Association of University Women and the Women’s Club. She has previously been affiliated with the boards of Stairways Behavioral Health, the Visiting Nurses Association, and Edinboro University Foundation, and was a member of the Mercyhurst President’s Associates and the finance committees of Catholic Charities and the Sisters of Mercy.

Schaaf will be seated on the Trustee Board in fall 2019 for an inaugural term lasting through 2023.
