Cummings Gallery inspires with watercolors exhibit

Fresh. Translucent. Immediate. Vibrant.

In “Watercolors on Paper,” Cummings Gallery presents a collection that captures these wonderful qualities of watercolor.Arizona The invitational exhibit honors watercolorist and Mercyhurst alumna Patricia Yahn and features 45 works by 16 regional artists.

All are invited to attend a reception for the artists on Thursday, Jan. 18, from 5 to 7 p.m., featuring an intimate performance by pianist Nicholas Nasibyan, a senior major in the D'Angelo Department of Music.

A Yahn watercolor study completed during a trip to Arizona is a highlight of the exhibit. Chosen by new gallery director Jessica Stadtmueller from a large volume of unframed works in Yahn’s studio, it has never been publicly exhibited before.

Of her chosen medium, Yahn says, “Watercolors are scary and exciting; you must do it right the first time. Unlike other media, watercolors, if overworked, become muddied, and the painting loses its spontaneity.”

Also featured are three of Daniel Austin's exquisitely detailed watercolor scenes of downtown Erie: "Warner Theater,” "14th and State" and "Federal Hill."

Joyce Perowicz’s three paintings – “Daisies and Blueberries," "Water Iris I" and “Water Iris II" – offer a crisp white and vibrant cobalt palette energized by her signature textured, painterly brushstrokes.

Abstract fields of rich color with flecks of gold on rice paper offer a refreshing and unexpected approach to the medium of watercolor in Stephanie Wood’s works.

The exhibit also features watercolors by Mary Ann Bliley, Jamie Borowicz, Marilyn Garwig, Sally Griffin, Luke Gehring, Mary Hamilton, Joe Krol, Victoria Norvaisa, Kris Risto, Deborah Sementelli, Wilda Sundberg and Judith Welch.

“Watercolors on Paper” will hang through Feb. 11.

Cummings Art Gallery, located in the lobby of the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center, is open weekdays (except Wednesday) from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
