The Mercyhurst University Honors Program is constantly looking for special opportunities for our Honors students. Our Freshman Honors Study Abroad Experience in Ireland is a select program open only to a limited number of first-year Honors students. Honors students who apply and are accepted into this study abroad program will travel with classmates and Mercyhurst faculty to Dungarvan, Ireland, for half of the Spring 2020 semester. Students will reside in Mercyhurst’s international center, with access to guest lectures, site visits and other opportunities for academic and professional development. This is a unique opportunity, as freshmen do not usually study abroad and is open to a limited number of students.

What Courses Will I Take?

Ireland Spring 2020 will feature a number of opportunities for students to earn credit that applies to the REACH Curriculum core and for some students, even major credit. Students will have the chance to take courses that could count for credit in at least two REACH areas:

  • Contexts and Systems
  • Humans in Connection

Honors students will have the opportunity to take these REACH courses as Honors courses, so you will not fall behind in completing Honors Program requirements.

Students who are majoring or minoring in History, Political Science, Philosophy, or Intelligence Studies will have the chance to capture some major or minor credit. In addition, students can take advantage of Mercyhurst’s diverse and growing online course offerings, both to stay on track with core or program requirements and to round out their academic experience. If Ireland is your dream, we'll work with you to make it happen!

As you know, each 16-week semester at Mercyhurst can be divided into two 8-week Mini semesters. Student can enroll in either semester-long courses, Mini-long courses, or a combination of both.

If you participate in this study abroad program, you will likely enroll in:

  • 2 to 3 Mini courses during the first Mini of the Spring Semester on Mercyhurst’s main campus in Erie, Pennsylvania
  • 2 to 3 Mini courses during the second Mini of the Spring Semester while abroad in Ireland
