Dr. Sarah Schouten maintains an active career as an educator and performer. She enjoys teaching students of all ages and ability levels and her students have successfully auditioned for numerous ventures ranging from Jr. High Symphonic Band to Graduate School Programs. Sarah currently serves as Instructor of Horn in the D'Angelo Department of Music at Mercyhurst University.
In addition to her endeavors as an educator, Sarah performs regularly with the Altoona Symphony Orchestra and the Music at Penns Woods Festival, and freelances frequently with other orchestras in Northwest and Central Pennsylvania. Her orchestral experience includes the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra, the Erie Chamber Orchestra, the Ocala Symphony, the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra, the Nittany Valley Symphony, the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Gulf Coast, and the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra.
As a chamber artist, she is member of Just Two, a horn/guitar duo with Tom Cody and the ChambersSchouten Horn Duo. She has been an active lecturer and performer at numerous conferences, workshops, and festivals including the Southeast Horn Workshop, the International Horn Symposium, the Stander Symposium, and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. She has also given recitals and masterclasses, as a soloist and chamber musician, at various universities including: SUNY Fredonia, Louisiana State University, Wright State University, The University of Dayton, Florida State University, Pennsylvania State University, Ouachita Baptist University, The University of South Alabama, and Pensacola Junior College.
Sarah earned her D.M. from Florida State University, her M.M. from The Pennsylvania State University, and B.A. in history, Spanish, and music, from the University of Dayton. Prior appointments include Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Edinboro University, Marywood University, and The Pennsylvania State University.
