Opera Pops and Sizzles!
Sunday May 03, 2020 - 4:30 pm
Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center
Erieites may not think they are opera fans, but they actually hear opera tunes all the time – on TV commercials, in cartoons, reinvented as in the Della Reese version of “Musetta’s Waltz” from La Boheme (known as “Don’t You Know”), and on and on. The 2020 edition of “Opera Pops and Sizzles,” conceived and directed by Louisa Jonason, features these “pop” opera tunes. The D’Angelo Opera Theatre will perform the “Tonight” quintet from Bernstein’s West Side Story; “Musetta’s Waltz” by Puccini; the “Jewel Song” by Gounod, among others. Enjoy a virtuosic rendition of “The Fire Song” from Ravel’s L’Enfante et Les Sortilege by Mercyhurst alumna Victoria McIlvain, and Maria Dombrowski’s delightful interpretation of Bernstein’s “Glitter and Be Gay,” which has been sung and recorded by everyone from Linda Ronstadt to Kristin Chenoweth. The scenes and arias are accompanied by the Mercyhurst Civic Orchestra, directed by Jonathan Moser. Performances are Friday, March 27, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 29, at 2 p.m. in the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $16.50 for adults, $13.50 for seniors and students, and $6 for Mercyhurst students and staff and youths. Visit the MIAC website or call 814-824-3000 to reserve tickets.
