The Mercyhurst Student Government Distinguished Speaker Series kicks off a new season Oct. 1 with a presentation by Ruth E. Carter, a Hollywood veteran who has outfitted iconic films from Malcolm X to Five Heartbeats to the mega-blockbuster Black Panther. Her unparalleled ability to develop an authentic story through costume and character has made her one of the most renowned costume designers today and earned her multiple Oscar and Emmy nominations. She took on Afrofuturism fashions for Black Panther. Learn about the inspiration behind Wakandan fashion, what it was like to create clothing for a fictional place, and the impact the costumes have had on Black Panther’s success. Carter will speak at the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center at Mercyhurst University on Monday, Oct. 1 at 8:30 p.m. This presentation is free and open to the public.
