PALEOZOIC

This era ranges from 542 to 251 million years ago. It began with the Cambrian explosion in which an unprecedented amount of life suddenly appeared in the fossil record, continuing into the Ordovician when some of the earliest fish appeared. The Devonian, starting approximately 415 million years ago, is known as the age of fishes. Recognizable fish and sharks appeared in the fossil record and diversified quickly and amphibians took their first steps onto land. Onward to the following period, the Carboniferous, the first reptiles appeared and began to take over. This lasted into the Permian when the reign of reptiles on land began.
